This is an absolutely beautiful box by the celebrated James Newman of London. There are Newman boxes and then there are these rare models. They a larger and reinforced with brass corners in the campaign style. These are truly the Rolls Royce of Watercolour boxes and as said earlier they are rare. This one as you can see has both a smaller mixing palette to the centre which here is unmarked. In the lower drawer which is held closed by a brass pin there is a large oval porcelain palette which is stamped with the Newman name. The large, dramatic and gothic label in the lid of the box proudly proclaims its maker. Not many of the original paints are present but there is a gorgeous set of genuine Victorian paints. Two cut glass I think! Water bowls are present together with a bone rule. There are also a few ceramic pans also marked Newman. This is a beautiful box and even if it were never used it will always be a beautiful and elegant piece of furniture. Approx 27 x 21 x 9cm. Any questions feel free to ask and thank you for looking.
