You’re viewing a rare and wonderfully made antique, cased watercolour set by Winsor & Newton, the finest makers in the world at the time. It dates from circa 1862 – 1870 and from the company’s original address at 38 Rathbone Place, London. The case is of polished mahogany with felt inlays and perfectly set brass corner strengthening. The inside of the lid and the fore-compartment are lined in tooled Moroccan leather with the Royal Warrant and address details. This is rare because I haven’t seen another case bearing the same label – this one shows that Prince Albert had already died (both he and The Queen patronised Winsor & Newton). The case has numerous compartments (some lift out on brass handles) for paint and accessories together with a lower drawer for brushes and canvas/paper. Overall condition is very good; there are a few bruises and marks to the leather but all commensurate with age and use. There is a brass escutcheon set in to the lid – it bears a name but no longer legible. The felt to the underside is quite heavily worn, though not visible. The case contains a large number of original W&N watercolour blocks, some of which appear unused. There are also a good number of blocks and bottled paints by other makers such as Rowney and Milburn. There are two cut crystal bottles containing fine powder but I don’t know what this is, except that the bottles are original to the case. On that basis, please fire away with any questions, but I might have to seek expert advice before being able to answer. I’d far rather you came to view the case and its contents but you can rest-assured it is as described.
